TamDrum™ Thickener

GL&V’s newest option for thickening pulp is the TamThickener™ technology. This drum thickener allows for 4-5% outlet consistency of thickened pulp.

The TamThickener™ system extracts water from pulp as it travels the inside length of a rotating drum. Pulp is fed to the center of the drum at the drive end, and thickened pulp is discharged from the other end, passing over an adjustable weir. Thickening occurs by gravity drainage of water through a stainless steel wire mesh that covers the drum surface.


The discharge weir sets the pulp level inside the drum. Once set, the weir needs no further adjustment unless there is a significant change in fiber drainage rate. Filtrate is collected in a filtrate tray that drains by gravity to a filtrate tank. The process is controlled by the height of the discharge weir, filtrate level in the tray (i.e., drum submergence) and drum rotational speed.


The entire unit is enclosed. The drum is rotated by a gear motor and chain drive. The drum wires are cleaned by a shower inside the hood near the inspection openings.

All wetted parts are made of corrosion resistant stainless steel. The drum is supported by a grease-lubricated roller bearing at the drive end and a water-lubricated plain bearing at the discharge end. The bearing supports are outside of the vat enclosure, protected from the process. The hood has inspection hatches to observe the wire and shower operation. The entire top of the hood can be removed in one piece to allow access for maintenance. 

The wire mesh that retains the pulp fibers inside the drum is installed first on the outside of the drum. A heavy wire of coarser mesh is then installed around the wire mesh and tensioned to properly support the wire mesh. During operation, the pulp inside the drum is entirely supported by this mesh. 

The TamThickener equipment is provided with a shower for continuous cleaning of the wire mesh. The cleaning shower has a manually operated internal brush for clearing plugged shower nozzles. 

The drum is rotated at 3-12 RPM by an adjustable speed gear motor and chain drive. The stationary feed pipe at the drive end has a double lip seal, lubricated with seal water, to seal the opening through the main bearing housing.
